In the UK – Forced marriage law sends ‘powerful message’

forced-marriage

Earlier this year, on the BBC news it was explained that –  ‘A new law in England and Wales making it a criminal offence to force people into marriage sends “a powerful message”.

The punishment for parents who force their child into marriage will be punished ‘by up to seven years in prison’.

Do you think that is the correct punishment?

Is 7 years enough? or is it too long?

I think up to 7yrs is a reasonable sentence , too short and nobody would bother reporting , but 7-10yrs I would think is reasonable .

5 – 7 years seem about right but remember that the other children at home would be left without a parent or parents.

I think it is important to distinguish the line between arranged and forced marriage, they are not synonymous with one another. And it is important to recognise the situation of forced marriage from both sides, thus its consequences and its meaning to both sides of the families.

The problem with these kinds of laws is that they do not resolve the whole problem, because people always find ways to avoid the punishment and sometimes it might be difficult to prove. I would prefer putting more effort on trying to get the people understand the violation of human rights and especially the consequences to the couple.
